Education R & D Report

Laws of Motion

A. Champagne & L. Klopfer
Learning Research and Development Center
University of Pittsburgh

Allows students to "discover" and master the key concepts of: Velocity, Acceleration, Force, Momentum and Friction.
Three simulated experiments:

  • Inclined Plane
  • Free Fall
  • A-Machine
    spacer265.gif (62 bytes)
Students can explore motion concepts quickly and easily with or without friction.
Experiment results are displayed in:
  • Normal and slow motion
  • Data tables
  • Still "snapshots" at equal time intervals
  • Graphs of position and velocity

Physics concepts are instilled by allowing students to test hypotheses quickly in light of experimental results. Graph and data interpretation skills are sharpened simultaneously. Concept mastery is achieved further by exploring physical motion in another world - where heavier objects fall faster (Aristotelian)- as well as in the Newtonian world.

"Best software of the year."
