Extensive data on 89,000 earthquakes and 1500 volcanoes Draws color topographic or coastline maps with superimposed earthquakes and volcanoes Zoom option displays areas where volcanoes, earthquakes and topography interrelate Cross section option plots earthquake foci Multimedia archive and activities emphasizing plate tectonics Volcanoes:
Name, location, height, number of known eruptions, last known eruption and type (one or
more of 46 available). Includes search capability. Earthquakes: Precise location of
epicenter by latitude and longitude, date, magnitude and depth of focus. Includes search
capability. Cross Section: Displays a depth profile between any two points on a map. Shows distance
on horizontal axis and foci on scaled vertical axis. Plots both earthquakes and volcanoes.
Features three display options: (1) normal 2D cross section; (2) stereo view that can be
rotated and changed in size and/or perspective; (3) topography display of the section area
in 3D. Includes print option. Map Options: Plot earthquakes and/or volcanoes on full-color topographic or coastline
maps; choice of Mercator or Polar equal-area projections; includes convenient pre-set
regional and concept maps (e.g. earthquakes with foci <20 km to show plate boundaries
and epicenters color-coded by magnitude). Custom maps can be drawn. Includes print option.
Selection Options: Choice of earthquakes or volcanoes or both on map with user-selected
characteristics and ranges. (For example, all earthquakes with a focus from 0 - 10 km
and/or all volcanoes in the region.) Different symbols and colors are available so maps
can be easily read-especially useful for illustrating concepts of plate tectonics. Multimedia Archive: 143 visuals covering six topics: volcanoes (including Mt. St.
Helens eruption sequence), volcanic landforms and products, faults, earthquake effects and
plate tectonics. CD-ROM Win/Mac |
