Volcano Lab Activities

The 1980 eruption of Mt. St. Helens sparked heightened interest in volcanoes. Even though Kilauea in Hawaii had been erupting off and on for decades, its relatively quiet flows failed to spark the same level of interest.

Why were the two eruptions so different? What is the difference between volcanoes like Kilauea and the more violent ones like Mt. St. Helens?

These lab activities are designed to introduce the student to some of

the differences between hot spot and stratovolcanoes, the devastation associated with the eruption of stratovolcanoes and the need for land use planning in these areas.

Activities

  • Eruption and Ashfall
  • Slope Comparison of Volcanoes
  • Eruption Frequency and Prediction
  • Eruption Effects and Land Use Planning

Set of 10 booklets LS-90 $49.00

Important
It is strongly recommended that students view the video program VOLCANOES! prior to doing these lab activities. Check Earth Science section for details.
